Leisure Buddies brings people together through genuine friendship. We match an adult NDIS participant with a cognitive or intellectual disability with a carefully screened community volunteer to form a genuine friendship. Matches are based on shared interests, location, and personality, creating relaxed, natural relationships that grow over time.
Interested in Building a Real Friendship?
Leisure Buddies is all about making meaningful connections.
We match an adult NDIS participant with a cognitive disability with a carefully screened community volunteer to form a genuine friendship. Matches are based on shared interests, location, and personality, creating relaxed, natural relationships that grow over time.
Through regular catch-ups, participants are supported to:
- Build confidence and independence
- Feel more connected and included in their community
- Try new activities and experiences
- Develop social and life skills

What might a Leisure Buddies catch up look like?

Every friendship is different, but outings often include:
- Catching up over coffee
- Going for a walk or to the shops
- Arts and crafts
- Going to the gym or playing sport
- Exploring local events
Some Leisure Buddy friendships become long-term and deeply meaningful, while others are more goal-focused and time-limited. What they all share is authenticity — volunteers offer friendship freely, not as paid carers, but as people who genuinely want to connect.
How we support each match
Inclusion Melbourne provides:
- Personalised recruitment and matching of volunteers
- Ongoing support from a Community Support Coordinator for both the participant and the volunteer
- Help to identify and address any personal, environmental, or structural barriers so each friendship can thrive
The Leisure Buddies program aligns with the goals of the NDIS to support independence, social participation, and greater community inclusion for people with disability.
